Games for Lunch: Metal Gear Solid (GBC)

In a nutshell: Tiny Gear Solid? Metal Gear Tiny? Metal Tiny Tiny?

0:45 I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I just accidentally nudged the power switch on my GBA and got warped back to the title screen. NOOOOOOooooooo! Oh well, this is as good excuse as any to try the VR missions.

0:48 The first few stages of the "sneaking mode" are pretty simple. Just wait for the soldiers to turn their backs to you then make a bee line for the exit.

0:50 Level 5 introduces the noisy metal grates that attract attention if you walk on them. I'm still amazed at how they've managed to take all the core components of MGS and fit them on an old portable.

0:52 Hidden lasers! They blink on and off, which is good, because if they just stayed on there's no way I could get by them. Looking for the identifying black dots in the walls is tough on the small screen.

0:55 After a few miscues, I finally make it past the laser arrays. Seems I can't just barrel through the stages anymore.

0:58 I'm totally stumped on how to pass the moving cameras in Stage 9 until I realize I have my reliable cardboard box to hide in. Someone should really add a cardboard box sensor to the circuitry.

1:00 I don't care what anyone says, watching a cardboard box sneak around a room will always be funny.

Would I play this game for more than an hour? Yes.

Why? It condenses the old-school essence of the original Metal Gear Solid without all the annoying distractions of the later games in the series. Plus, it's portable!

This column was based on a retail copy of the game purchased on a minor binge at GameStop's classic Game Boy clearance sale. Five games for $16! Can't beat that!
