Kirby's Epic Yarn is so Yarny

in

One of my secret hopes for this year's E3 was the announcement of a new Kirby game. I was serving jury duty in New York during Nintendo's press conference but, I got a text from a friend listing all of the games Nintendo was revealing to the public. I was stunned to see Kid Icarus: Uprising, a new Donkey Kong Country, and then Kirby's Epic Yarn.

My first thought of Kirby's Epic Yarn was that it was a sequel to Kirby's Canvas Curse for the DS. I figured they took the same engine and changed the rainbow lines to strings of yarn. Made sense to me at least, and I wouldn't have been disappointed with that either; Canvas Curse was a really fun and innovative game to play.

When I got home and looked at the actual screenshots for Kirby's Epic Yarn however, I was blown away. Not only is Kirby's Epic Yarn a full-fledged Wii game but, the yarn storybook style is visually stunning. It was as though they took a stitch out of Little Big Planet's Sackboy and created the entire world out of that style.

Those who know me are aware that I generally don't care about graphics or how pretty a game looks. I'm all about gameplay first and everything else second. That's not saying that I see no value in graphics but, other aspects of a game's design are simply more important to me than the visuals.

That being said, It's hard to ignore the visual style of this game, mostly because it is unique. Sure, Crysis 2 may be one of the graphically sharpest games out there but it's hard to distinguish how sharp it is from, let's say, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, or Killzone 3. Kirby's Epic Yarn at least gives me something different to look at, which will ultimately lead to a different experience.

I've heard rumors that Kirby can't inhale enemies like he normally does in most Kirby games. I'm not sure how that is going to work out as that is one of the major stables of Kirby but, I'm willing to hold off my skepticism since I've enjoyed every platforming-focused Kirby game to date.

That, and because I really want that Kirby tank.

Like I said in my post, KIRBY TANK. That is all that matters right now.

While I love the artistic design of the game, I'm a bit saddened that Kirby's lost his signature power-stealing ability. The last time he was without it was, what, the original Kirby's Dream Land on the game boy? I guess the new concept of Kirby having a ton of abilities all at once could work. Looking forward to trying it out!
