Could A Non-Turn-Based Pokemon Game Work?
While putting in late nights with Pokemon White and Dissidia Duodecim Prologus this past week, my mind continued playing as my body drifted to sleep and dreamt of a crossover of Top 5 NPD Rating calibre.
However, the Dissidia games take a handful of characters from the turn-based Final Fantasy series and throw them into an action-based arena brawler with the option of using an RPG menu system with partial AI instead of having you mash your way to victory.
Pokemon would easily thrive with a system like this. Imagine it: Pokemon Colosseum (GCN) graphics with a Dissidia-like battle system. Even simple moves like Vine Whip could come to life, making battles more akin to the cartoon series and really pulling you into the action and giving a sense of urgency to the fight. And if it were to be implemented on the DS or 3DS it could be more like a Street Fighter IV fight, or a battle from Super Smash Bros. or the Tales Of series: 2.5D-sidescrolling with 3D special/critical attacks. Battles of that nature would be super effective.
Of course, Nintendo will never go for this. They do have pokemon in the Super Smash Bros. series, but there are only a few and they are limited to the battle space. I’d like to see a full on adventure with the kind of action-oriented battles I’d mentioned, but the games have a formula that works extremely well and I doubt Nintendo would consider something else until the series’ numbers really start to drop off.
