Review: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Subtitle:
Has The Darkness Taken You, Too?
thumbnail_summary:

I've waited a very long time for a Kingdom Hearts game that compares to the original: Birth By Sleep comes close.

Review: Monday Night Combat

Subtitle:
MONEYBALL!!!
thumbnail_summary:

I feel like there’s been a problem with shooters recently on the Xbox 360. Amidst all the various iterations of Halo and Call of War and Gears of Duty that come out every year and the vast lengths of seriousness they bring with them, we’ve lost something near and dear to the FPS experience: what happened to the fun? Sure, we like killing terrorists and space aliens sometimes, but recently it’s been lacking a certain....something. Just in time for Microsoft’s annual Summer of Arcade comes Monday Night Combat, a simplistic-looking third-person shooter that’s an easy play for casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Review/Post-mortem: APB

Subtitle:
What does it say when a pay-to-play game makes you want to turn it off after only five minutes?
thumbnail_summary:

When Grand Theft Auto III debuted on the Play Station 2, apart from establishing a new genre, it sparked the question, "How fun would this be multiplayer?!" The answer, at least as far as APB was concerned, is: "Not very". APB tried to take the open world formula of GTA's crimefest and make it a massively (not that massive, as it turns out) multiplayer bonanza. What was the outcome of this endeavor? The worst and most expensive flop in video game history. It couldn't have done worse if Kevin Costner had directed it. With one hundred million dollars ($100,000,000!!!) down the drain, what the hell went so wrong?

Scott Pilgrim vs. The Games

When crazy ex-boyfriends just isn't enough.

Recently, Scott Pilgrim, the title character of the video game-savvy series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, received his full big screen treatment. The film debut dovetailed neatly with the release of both the final volume in the series, Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, a retro 8-bit brawler reminiscent of Double Dragon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game.

Review: Metroid: Other M

thumbnail_summary:

If you’ve never played Super Metroid from the SNES days, I recommend watching the ending on YouTube, as the intro cinematic for Metroid: Other M on Wii is a current generation remake of that fight and its spectacularness is only made greater by knowing the source material.

If this sounds like watching a normal football game on television, then EA Sports has done its job.

What Video Games Could Teach

Subtitle:
What We Could Learn From Video Games.
thumbnail_summary:

It’s back-to-school season, and as I peruse the stacks of Twilight, Iron Man, & Hello Kitty supplies in my neighborhood drug store, I can’t help but feel that something is missing. If I were looking for a fractal folder, Trapper Keeper, or googly-eyed barnyard animal pen, I’d be set, but what I want to know is this: Where are all the video games? Now that might seem a little strange. It’s a widely accepted fact that video games are a form of mindless entertainment which comes in somewhere just below television and just above Satanism on the scale of “Worst Ways to Spend Your Time.” They certainly have no place among the poster boards and mechanical pencils of serious scholastic pursuits.

I can’t even begin to tell you how often I’ve been raring to play some Team Fortress 2 or Counter-Strike, get a bunch of friends together and be held up by someone having a microphone issue. Lagging sound, echoing, volumes being wildly disproportionate; I’ve dealt with every kind of issue imaginable and I’m certain you have too if you have ever played a PC game with a friend.

Review: Burn Zombie Burn

Subtitle:
With a name like Burn Zombie Burn, what’s not to like?
thumbnail_summary:

There’s a school of thought in gaming, whose proponents claim that a little thing like bad controls shouldn’t ruin a game’s reputation. I am not one of those people. The PS3 game Lair may have been an amazing game, but the god awful control scheme made it a shitty game, and though it saddens me to do so, I considered it bad enough that pregnant women should be advised to avoid it. Burn Zombie Burn (BZB) is almost one of those games. However instead of being painful, its flaws are merely annoying.

Review: Earthworm Jim HD

Subtitle:
Cows and Toilets and Boogers, oh my!
thumbnail_summary:

Earthworm Jim HD is a remake of the old 1994 Sega Genesis classic and harkens back to the days of old school platform games. In June, X-Box Live Arcade was the first to see the release of this title, followed by PSN early this August. Earthworm Jim HD is basically the same game with a new graphics engine and a few new features such as multiplayer co-op, 3 new levels, and (my favorite) the ability to pick which of the levels you want to play though. Aside from the new coat of paint and the additions, Earthworm Jim HD is pretty much the same game you played when you were younger, for better or for worse. For the young gamers out there who are picking up this title for the first time, play it on the “original” difficulty if you want to see why older gamers are always complaining about how easy and dumbed down games are these days.
