Review: Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

Subtitle:
We're Not Afraid of Ghosts, But This Game Is A Nightmare
thumbnail_summary:
Last month, Atari released Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, a new foray into the Ghostbusters universe. If you remember, 2009 brought us Ghostbusters: The Video Game, a third-person shooter that placed players in the role of the Rookie, a new employee hired by the original 4 Ghostbusters to help out with the increased workload brought on by the return of Gozer (the bad guy/hot chick covered in bubbles from the first movie). It’s important to point out how and why Ghostbusters: The Video Game was as good as it was, because the new Ghostbusters release shows that maybe it was just too damn good to follow up.

Review: Sims Medieval

Subtitle:
What?! A Sims game for actual gamers?
thumbnail_summary:
What would it take to make me enjoy a Sims game at this point? Sims games have never really had compelling goals and no real way to fail. You are simply given a sandbox and told to create.

What would it take to make me enjoy a Sims game at this point? Sims games have never really had compelling goals and no real way to fail. You are simply given a sandbox and told to create. This works to a point, but eventually everything just feels like "going through the motions". Why was I trying so hard to make money? To buy the best car in the game? What would that really get me? The more questions I asked myself about the goals I created, the more everything felt hollow to me. It was with this previously established mindset that I approached The Sims: Medieval.

Hunted, a fantasy action game, is a fresh take on the classic dungeon crawl experience that delivers the intensity and action of a modern-day shooter. The warrior Caddoc and the huntress E'lara must fight their way through besieged towns, sprawling dungeons, and ancient ruins as they become entwined in a tale of corruption and deceit. The two must combine Caddoc's brute strength with E'lara's deadly accuracy to vanquish a horde of foul creatures and untangle the mystery of the Demon's Forge, gaining access to unstoppable magic and an arsenal of weaponry hidden by ancient puzzles along the way.

Review: Magicka

Subtitle:
The Safeword Is Banana?!?
thumbnail_summary:
Magicka is one of those games that you find yourself struggling to describe properly, like Katamari Damacy or Castle Crashers. If you tried to explain it in simple, clear terms, you’d end up feeling like an idiot. Embarrassment aside, Magicka could be described as a game where you run around as wizards zapping stuff with magic. Though describing it as such would probably result in your friends staring at you and replying with “Okay, and is that all?” If you tried to describe the essence of the game, the action, silliness, and nonstop pop culture references, they’d probably give you that terribly awkward look. You know, the one that lets you know they’ve completely missed the point of your joke and that it’s entirely your fault for sucking as a comedian. There’s also the option of describing it by comparing it to slightly similar games. For example, a combination of Ghostbusters, Overlord, Castle Crashers, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Unfortunately, that kind of description tends to only make sense to the person saying it. On the other hand, this is a review of the game, so I’d best get on with it!

Review: Homefront

Subtitle:
A War Hits Home
thumbnail_summary:
Countless nights have been drained through bottles and shots, hunched over booths, where my friends and I talk potential disaster scenarios. Deciding on M-14’s or silenced M9’s for zombies, where to hide in case of robots, how to seduce aliens when they invade (it’s really all you can do), and where to run in case of a supervolcano eruption. But how can you prepare for all in the cornucopia of doom? Now, an occupation, in which our military’s crippled and our basic human rights are thrown out the window, I can do something about.
