Review: Fallout: New Vegas

Subtitle:
What happens in Fallout, stays in Fallout.
thumbnail_summary:
Smoke rises from burning homes like the fleeing dreams of those who once struggled to make this land their own. Along the sides of this town’s main street stand the posts upon which its residents have been crucified. Not yet dead, but too far gone to save, their moans and cries provide a macabre orchestra for this tragedy.

Kick Asteroids!

in
Asteroids.jpg

With the help of a neat little applet created by 18-year-old Swede Erik Rothoff Andersson, you can now treat any webpage as if it were the seminal arcade space shooter, Asteroids. Just go to Erik's site - erkie.github.com, click or drag the button, and you're off and running. W for thrust, A & D to turn, and Space to shoot!

Like Erik says, it's great for blasting a path through annoying banner ads! :D

Review: Civilization V

Subtitle:
There's No Turning Back Now.
thumbnail_summary:
Civilization (the original) was one of my first PC games. Even at that young age (somewhere around ten years old), I knew that there was something special about it. While I had begged my dad to get me a Nintendo because I played Mike Tyson's Punchout at a friend's house and I was still very into those dusty cartridges, I knew that Civ offered something that could never be matched on the TV. You could say that Civ guaranteed that I would never truly become a console gamer. Consoles could be entertaining, but they would never be able to match the experience that games like Civ could provide.

Elemental's Patching Hell

Elemental: War of Magic was released in late August to scathing reviews. The game was, in a word, unfinished. It suffered from numerous bugs and crashes, and much of the foundational gameplay design was flawed from concept through execution. I've been hesitant to even begin formulating a proper review for the game because, quite frankly, I've gotten the sense from reading developer diaries post-release that even Stardock is not sure what the game is supposed to be about.

Review: Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Subtitle:
I Wish I Could Forget This One.
thumbnail_summary:

I don’t get it. I simply don’t get it. Developer Frictional Games’ new baby, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is getting positive review after positive review. Critics go wild for its haunting atmosphere and sense of terror. They talk about its rock solid game design and wonderfully executed mechanics. At the time of this writing, Amnesia has a metacritic score of 85, with a user score of 9.4 out of ten. I guess these guys have only played the first hour or so of the game, because as good as Amnesia begins the game doesn’t hold up to the promise of its start.

Review: Mafia 2

Subtitle:
Can a gamer impose on a game?
thumbnail_summary:

Empire Bay greets you at the main menu with a lovely cityscape, complete with a faux-Empire State Building. One of the first sights you see in the game is the majestic towers rising powerfully into the sky. As you play, those structures are always there, in the background. They seem to whisper, "You have stepped into a large world. Welcome and enjoy everything this universe has to offer you."
